SUPPORTING THE EDUCATION OF LEARNERS IN KOMOLION

We believe that education is the key to community empowerment. By providing education and exposure to external ideas, we hope to develop a Komolion full of leaders equipped to lead their community to a state of self-sustained prosperity.

Boarding School Sponsorship Program

Komolion Fund currently sponsors boarding school education for 21 boys and girls from the Komolion Community at elementary through university-level schools. The 36 children who have benefited from this program have received an otherwise inaccessible quality of education, exposure to life and ideas beyond their rural community, and skills that are empowering them to become a strong generation of future leaders.

Improving Komolion Primary and Secondary Schools

We are also striving to increase the quality of education within the Komolion Community itself. The Komolion Fund provides accommodation and salary for two teachers at Komolion Primary and Secondary schools as we seek a quality of tutelage not affordable through state funding alone.

In 2025, the Komolion Fund launched our School Lunch Program, which provides a daily meal of maize and beans for every student at the Komolion Schools. This program provides students with the nourishment to stay focused on their studies and parents with an incentive to keep their children in school, resulting in a drastic improvement to regular attendance records.

Improvements to Komolion School infrastructure have been a focal point of service trips by the Baylor University Men’s Choir and other groups. While visiting the Komolion community, these groups have built desks, roofed latrines, painted classrooms, installed solar power for students to study at night, funded textbooks, donated school supplies, and more.

Going forward, increasing the quality of education at Komolion Primary and Secondary schools is a top priority of the Komolion Fund. Limited classroom resources, lack of internet, and language barriers between students and educational content (which is often in English) are all key challenges we are fighting to address. Our goal is for every student to be well-prepared for a high school education they might receive through our sponsorship program, which will, in turn, develop students into strong, capable community leaders who are well-equipped to invoke positive change within their community.

A History of our Education Program

When the Bradleys led a music group to Kenya in 2007, they visited the Komolion village on the northwest shore of Lake Baringo. The residents of Komolion belong to the eastern branch of the Pokot people group, a sub-group of the Kalenjin tribe.

Our guide, Zipporah Sindiyo, observed that there were few girls attending school beyond the equivalent of 4th grade in US schools. Conversation revealed that most girls underwent female genital mutilation and were married off around age 12. Although both FGM (also referred to as female circumcision) and child marriage are illegal in Kenya, it is impossible for officials to prevent them entirely, especially in remote areas like Komolion.

The Sindiyos were experienced in rescuing Maasai girls from FGM and making provision for their education, so they were helpful in securing parental permission for four girls to leave the village for boarding school. The Baylor Men’s Choir and other students raised the funds for the girls’ education, a practice that continued during following service trips.

In 2017, these funds were formalized into the Komolion Human Development Fund. Both boys and girls now benefit from our education programs, both through boarding school sponsorships and investments in the local Komolion Primary and Secondary schools. Educational development is at the very core of what we do: through education, we truly will develop a more prosperous Komolion community.
